WOW!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!

Alex's Loft Bed Made From PVC Water Pipe

When Alex was 3 years old I decided to give him a little extra room in his bedroom by building him a loft bed with a lot of play room underneath. I had been using PVC pipe for other projects and thought it would be good for this one, too, so I made some measurements of PVC pipe fittings and created some 3D CAD models so I could construct the whole thing in the computer before ever cutting a piece of pipe.

PVC pipe is great stuff to work with. You can get it at any home supply store, it is cheap, strong, easy to cut, fast to glue, and there are enough standard fittings that you can make almost anything. There's no need to be particularly accurate or precise when cutting, and the fittings provide accurate 90 degree angle joints. The only tools you need are a tape measure, almost any kind of saw, and a rubber mallet. A drill comes in handy, too.

First I measured his mattress and figured out how big the mattress platform needed to be. I also had to figure out how he was going to climb up into the bed- a ladder, of course!

In the end, here's what I came up with (click the picture for a larger image):

So far the loft bed plans have been used to make two beds- my son's and my nephew's. My brother built the bed using my plans and everything worked out exactly as expected (though he left out the middle bar on the railing). I'd post a photo of Alex's bed but his room is so messy it's embarrassing. A photo my nephew's bed (made by my brother using my plans) has been on the web (here) for about a year and I've had about fifty requests for plans to duplicate it. I was hoping to get $10 for a set of plans, but so far everyone who has asked for the plans balked at the price, so I have decided to make the full set of plans available here, free. Don't say I never did anything nice for you! If you build the bed please send me an email and a photo and I'll post it here.

update October 2007:

Finally, after emails from about a hundred people about the bed I have a photo from someone who has built it!

Here's a bed that was made by Stacey S. and her son using these plans. Like my brother, she decided to leave out the middle rail.

Update August 2008:

I finally took a good picture of Alex's bed. Yes, here it is, the original! Note that I have raised the bed height because we moved to a place with higher ceilings. The ladder now has one rung more than shown on the assembly drawing. The vertical support pipes are now about 51 1/4" long and I wouldn't recommend going any higher. The bed starts to get pretty wobbly when they get that long.

The structural part of the bed is made entirely from 2" schedule 40 PVC water pipe and fittings. The railing is made from 1 1/2" schedule 40 pipe. I put a few pine boards on the mattress platform to support the mattress instead of using a box spring. Unless you have high ceilings, you'll want to do the same.

Tips on building the bed:

When you buy the fittings and pipe, buy a couple extra of each piece. You can return the extras when the project is finished. Nothing is more frustrating than making a mistake and having to make another run to Home Depot just before closing time so you can buy one lousy elbow or T.

I made the bed in sections then connected them together. The subassemblies correspond to the assembly drawings (see links below). I made them in this order- base, mattress platform, ladder, railing.

Cut the pipe pieces, then dry-fit everything before applying any glue. This is where the rubber mallet comes in handy! You will need the mallet to get the pieces apart after dry-fitting. Apply a little thought to the assembly sequence. I found for example, that the best way to make the ladder was to first glue a T to the end of a rung, then glue the other T to the other end of the same rung. How do you assure that the two T's will be aligned? When gluing the second T to the rung, quickly position it as close as you can by eyeball, then press it against the floor so that it will rotate into alignment with the other T. The glue sets in a matter of seconds, so time is of the essence! Once the rungs and T's are assembled, you can add the vertical pieces.

The same sort of process is used throughout the bed construction.

PVC pipe usually has some red or black ink markings on it. You can clean the ink off by wiping the pipe with a rag dampened with acetone. Clean off the ink before you glue the pipes together!

I left the main vertical supports unglued so I could take the bed apart easily to move it. It is a good idea to drive a single screw through the fittings and pipes at any unglued connection to ensure that they can't come apart.

The plans consist of shopping/cutting list that you can take to the store and five drawings showing how the parts fit together. Here they are:

THE SHOPPING LIST - Print it out and take it with you to the store. You can check off the items as you fill your cart.

THE CUTTING LIST - note: the lengths of pipe pieces on the shopping list are longer than the dimensions shown on the drawings. The drawing dimensions show the exposed part of the pipe and don't include the ends that are hidden inside the fittings.

ASSEMBLY DRAWINGS - These will show you how the pieces go together. Duh!

If you want to make a bunk bed, you just make 2 mattress platforms, add another rung or two to the ladder and you're good to go (you're going to need high ceilings):

Update July 30, 2009:

Joe "Nitro Joe" Higgs built a bunk bed based on my plans and sent me a photo. Click the image below to see a larger image. Joe has a pretty good science web site with lots of science demos for kids. Check it out here: http://www.nitrojoe.org/1.html Thanks Nitro Joe!

SHOWERS ARE OVERRATED ANYWAYS!!!! WANT PROOF????

ASK YOUR KIDS!!!!
*SMILE*

It's been very nippy here in Southern Tennessee. Around here the highs have been in the mid-20's. Of course, we all know that is well below freezing point.

In the winter, we normally leave our water running on really cold nights like last night. However, last year we installed a new shower. It isn't just any shower. It was completely designed by...YOURS TRULY.

Our shower is like one you might find in a campground shower house. It is very large, 4' x 6'. I really love my shower. (Squirrel) Anyways, I asked for the showerhead to be on the opposite side of the room and so it was installed there. I also wanted one knob instead of two. Looks nice. Very nice. However, if nights get cold and I choose to leave the water running, I have to leave it almost full blast to have the hot running as well. Not happening. Two problems there. Because of that, the shower water is now frozen. *SIGH*

We have water everywhere else so we aren't completely without water. That alone is a reason to shout """""""HalleluYah!!!!"""""""""

We are praying the pipes thaw with no damage to them. I'm sure all will be fine. I'm a very positive person and think of the best in every situation.

Shalom,
Amanda

Piling up on my king size bed and watching a good wholesome movie late of the morning when it is yucky and rainy outside. Wow how cozy a down comforter and hot chocolate is when you have your loved ones snuggling with you for hours. Wanna talk about comfort, love, and a sense of security!

We've Been Busy Lately

Hello Friends,

I haven't posted lately since we have been trying to sell our rv. We thought Yahweh (the Lord) wanted us to get rid of it soon, but it hasn't happened yet. So, we are just going to keep it until he sends the right family.

~

We are enjoying the summer to the fullest extent. Our garden is thriving. We have gotten so much fresh food and are still getting plenty. Some nights for dinner, we just eat fresh veggies from the garden with no meat. Fried okra, beans or peas, squash, creamed potatoes and sliced tomatoes. We are so blessed to be able to use the land Yahweh gave us to produce food on.

~

The children have been enjoying the pool mostly. Having a pool provides a way for us to enjoy the water without going to a public place and having to put up with seeing half naked people. Yahweh knew what He was doing when he planned out and executed those plans in our lives. We are more blessed than we ever thought we could be.

~

Since we are keeping the rv, we decided to take on a couple more children to babysit. I do enjoy my babysitting children greatly. Parker (a little 4 year old we babysit) has come a long way in the last couple years. My prayer is that Yahweh brings me the children He wants me to have to keep.

~

We are learning about sharks and other sea animals. Parker and Jedidiyah love to learn about animals. So, why not teach them what they like to learn about? That's the way we feel about it. I will post pictures of their craft projects as soon as we're done with them.

~

I am sorry to be jumping from one thing to the other. I have missed posting on my blog and am glad to be able to get back to it.

I hope to be able to get a new article posted by tomorrow. I also have some pictures of our produce to post. I have to get dinner laid out and laundry hung out first.

~

So, until I can take another break, BE BLESSED!!

~

Blessings,

Amanda :)

Amazing Lemons!

We all know that lemons make great lemonade, but did you know there are numerous other uses for them? Try these ideas the next time you have any extra lemons!

1. Remove ink spots from clothing. While ink is still wet, apply lemon juice liberally to the spot. Wash the garment in normal cycle with regular laundry detergent in cold water.

2. Get rid of dandruff. Shampoo hair, then rinse with water. Mix two tablespoons of lemon juice and 2 cups of water; pour through hair. Repeat every other day until dandruff disappears.

3. Deodorize a cutting board. Wash with lemon juice to rid a cutting board of the smell of garlic, onions, or fish.

4. Remove berry stains from hands. Rinse hands in the juice of fresh lemons.

5. Remove rust and mineral discolorations on cotton clothing. Use one cup of lemon juice in the washer.

6. Clean your microwave. Add 4 tablespoons of lemon juice to one cup water in a microwave-safe four cup bowl. Boil for five minutes in the microwave, allowing the steam to condense on the inside walls of the over. Then wipe clean.

7. Relieve a cough. Mix 4 tablespoons of lemon juice, one cup honey, and 1/2 cup olive oil. Heat 5 minutes then stir vigorously. Take one teaspoon every 2 hours.

8. Help soothe poison ivy. Applying lemon juice over the affected areas should soothe itching and alleviate the rash.

9. Train a dog to stop barking. Squirt a little lemon juice in the dog’s mouth and say “Quiet.”

10. Relieve rough hands or sore feet. Apply lemon juice, rinse, then massage with olive oil. Put on socks so you won’t slip on the floor.

11. Clean brass, copper, and stainless steel sinks. Make a paste with lemon juice and salt, scrub gently, then rinse well with water

Tips for Safer Housekeeping

Steps to "Safer" Housekeeping

* Spray all doorknobs, light switches and knobs and wipe down. I used straight
vinegar in a spray bottle with several drops of lavender shaken in. You can use
alcohol, peroxide (more below) or a spray of tea tree oil and distilled water.

* Use peroxide on faucets, kitchen and bathroom sinks, counters, worktables,
tubs nad toilets.

* Dissolve Borax in clean water and wipe down doorways, appliance handles, wipe
down surfaces, and mop the floors.

* Adding tea tree oil, lavender, or eucalyptus oil in my laundry. I add a few to
several drops as the machine is filling with water.

I'm sure there is lots more but these are some basics I am doing around here.

Another thing:
I already wash my hands so much I have to keep lotion around and now that I'm
doing that even more, I need more. I've started rubbing a small piece of coconut
oil on my hands and between my fingers. Instant softness!

Blessings,

Amanda

Submission

Dear Sisters,

I don't think I've done a very good job of explaining submission. I had another full page written on it yesterday when my little guy accidentally jiggled the plug on my computer, so I lost everything. ~Smile~ Maybe it was for the best.
~

A couple of sweet friends so kindly recommended that I share concrete examples of how I submit to my husband. And, you know, that is just the kind of writing I love to read by women. Concrete examples. So today I would like to share just that.

~

Before I begin sharing concrete examples, however, I must explain that my heart changed toward my husband when I began to fall in love with Yahshua all over again. When I began to thirst for His Word and time alone with Him every day, I learned more about submission than I ever realized before. I learned that my eyes had to be on Yahshua. Not on my husband's faults, or lack of leadership, as I perceived he should be or should lead. And as I grew closer to Yahshua, I understood that intimacy with my husband was of the prime importance, after intimacy with Yahweh.
~

Now this is the interesting part...as I fell in love with Yahshua again, so also, I fell deeply in love with my honey again. That wonderful, honeymoon love that Yahshua speaks about when He reminds the church in Ephesus just what they had lost:

~

"Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love." Revelation 2:4
~

Marriage is a beautiful picture of that first love. My husband is my first love on this earth. I learned that submitting to him was building him up, supporting him, helping him, and in so doing, bringing much respect to him. How could I do this unless I knew his heart? So I set it up in our home that we might have time alone together. Early in the morning we have the most wonderful talks over coffee. I stopped sleeping in and got up first with Yahweh, and then I was ready with coffee for Art. This started six years ago when my children were 4 weeks old, 2 years old, 5 years old, and 8 years old. And it has continued to this morning.

~

I asked Yahweh to help me love him as Elohim intended a wife to love her husband. I started to tell that man of mine two good things a day that I noticed about him. Words like these started to spill out of my mouth:
~

"You are so good looking."
"You are a good father."
"I love the way you say, 'Son,' to those boys of yours."
"You are like a fine wine aging just perfectly."
"You bring such good to this family."
"You are such a good provider."
"We always have more than enough with you taking care of us."
"You are so clever with your hands."
"I know you can do it. You always do!"
"You are so generous."
"I love to be with you."

~

The more I practiced praising my husband, the more I saw him change. In the mean time, I worked on myself. For as I studied the Word of Yahweh concerning my job as a helpmeet, I realized that I could bring much respect and honor to my husband by my busy hands. Not my busy mouth. But my busy hands. And since I have a tendency to have a busy mouth, I had to take some drastic measures. I had to shut my phone down every morning. To this day. Why? Because the morning hours are my most productive hours. As the day wears on, I tend to get more fatigued. So it is best that I don't talk to anyone but my children in the morning, and instead get my hands busy, busy, busy.
~

How? Concretely...~Smile~...I started to learn how to better run my home. I began to cook more from scratch, which stretched my husband's income, and brought him much delight. I began to study ways to use our money wisely, and essentially became his financial advisor. This week we will sign a loan reducing our house payment considerably as I sought out the best loan rate for us. I have done likewise research to get us the lowest car insurance. I use a savings plan for our electricity, reducing my heavy usage to the morning hours. I learned how to do our taxes, that we might save there. I learned how to cut our family's hair, that we might save there. I learned how to teach our children that we might give them a private Christian education at a fraction of the cost. I learned to do a lot of writing rather than long distance calling. I learned how to make my home look "country- cozy" at minimal cost from bargain shopping at thrift shops, garage sales, and swap meets. I learned to prepare ahead for my family that I might laugh along with the Proverbs 31 woman at the future. So in the summer, I think winter. And in the winter, I think summer. I learned to shop more wisely with that kind of thinking and preparation.

~

Presently I am studying herbs and learning to cook with honey and freshly ground wheat. For I have found that my job in the kitchen is so very important to this family's health. Since I began cooking healthier and learning to use herbs, we have not seen a doctor as much as we use to. I am also practicing, every now and then, a little sewing, some gardening, and some canning. My desires are to learn to knit and crochet better in the future. I would also like to learn how to quilt and make rugs. Oh, there's so much to look forward to!
~

For a well run, cozy home, well trained and taught children, good cooking, orderly clothing, and the income stretched to its fullest fruitfulness, brings honor to my husband. And how I have fallen in love with him and want to do just that. For I have fallen in love with Yahweh, and now realize the far reaching effects for Yahweh just such a home has on the many loved ones it touches.

~

Have I fully achieved such a home yet? No, but it is getting better and better the more I practice at it. Sometimes I get discouraged by my struggle with procrastination and disorganization from so many years of bad habits. Then I remember from where I've come. I use to spend hours on the phone talking to my friends, an hour and a half in front of the television watching soap operas, hours reading romance novels late into the night, and countless hours at the mall and other stores . I don't do any of those things anymore. Yahweh has replaced them with so much more, and has blessedly taken the junk out of my mind. He has replaced it instead with His beautiful Word.
~

He has been my strength and my song all along. Now when my husband comes home he sees a much more peaceful woman. Praise music is in the background, for this keeps my focus on YAHSHUA all day. Something good has been cooking, or is cooked. His children have been taught, especially in Elohim's Word; so they are different children, as I am a different woman. Our home, to my husband, is one of the most peaceful places on earth. He says he longs to get here after a day at work.

~

That, to me, is the essence of submission. It is peace in practice. It is a woman (the heart of the home) loving a man (the head of the home) as Yahweh intended. It is Proverbs 31 being played out day after day. For in Proverbs 31 the "law of kindness" is on her mouth, while her hands are very, very busy doing good for her family. And a "gentle and quiet spirit are precious in His sight." For if one "controls the tongue, one can bridle the entire body."
~

It is Mary saying to Gabriel the angel, "Behold the bondslave of Yahweh. Let it be done to me according to your word."

~

A bondslave of Yahweh. This is a woman you want to emulate. This is a woman you want to know. A woman who treasures and ponders Yahweh's Word in her heart. She is not anxious or upset about many things, that is why Yahweh put His Son with her for thirty years. She is favored because of her complete devotion to Yahweh and the desire to make herself a slave to His Will. For His great glory. Not a lot of questions about how He was going to do all this through her, rather a gentle and quiet trust in Him.
~

When a woman will quietly trust Yahweh like this and build up her husband, thus building up her home, she will practice "winning him without a word" to The Word, as described in 1 Peter 3. Then he will observe "her chaste conduct accompanied by fear." For the "fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;" and this woman is personifying that very wisdom in her home.

~

Concretely, what can happen? Well, I can only speak from my own home. I now see my husband studying the Word of Yahweh and leading our family as Elohim intended. I now see my junior higher reading his Bible every night, on his own initiative. I now see my high schooler reading his Bible also every night, on his own initiative. Why? Well, it all started years ago when I decided to take Yahweh at His Word in 1 Peter 3:1-2 and quiet my heart each morning alone with Yahshua; lay my life down as His bondslave; get my mouth praising and my hands busy; and start building my home as so beautifully described in Proverbs 31. My husband said that my changed life drew him to the Word. And my high schooler said that he wanted to commit to reading Yahweh's Word each day as I had. My junior higher wanted to be like his brother. It is truly Yahweh's incredible work.
~

That is why I point to the submission of the Messiah to The Father when I speak about submission to women. And the godly submission of the church to the Messiah. This is our perfect definition of submission as wives under our husbands. This godly action is what draws others to our beautiful Yahweh. Can I do it on my own? No. That is why I need to be alone with my beautiful Yahweh and Savior every day. I need to know Him and say with Paul, "I count it all a loss at the surpassing value of knowing Yahshua the Messiah my Yahweh." Because then I will understand what it means to submit to Him, and... to him.

~

For knowing my husband's mind is very important in submitting to him. I found that I could know his mind just the way that I did when I was dating him. How? From lots and lots of conversation together. Communication is the first thing the enemy tries to crush during war time. It is also the first thing our enemy tries to crush in a marriage. To build communication in my marriage I got up early to be alone with him. I stayed up late to wait for him. I made the afternoons special by having tea ready for him when he came home from work. I knew his mind after spending so much time with him. A concrete example is that I knew he liked me home when he came home from work. So I stopped going anywhere that prevented me from being home then on a regular basis. Yahweh has rewarded me far more than I have given up. My husband and I are closer than we were when we first got married. But the best part, oh, the very best part, is we are closer to Yahshua.

~

Submission works. It is the concrete in a marriage.

What is Home?

What is home?

“A roof to keep out the rain? Four walls to keep out the wind? Floors to keep out the cold? Yes, but home is more than that. It is the laugh of a baby, the song of a mother, the strength of a father, warmth of loving hearts, lights from happy eyes, kindness, loyalty, comradeship. Home is school and church for young ones, where they learn what is right, what is good, and what is kind, where they go for comfort when they are hurt or sick; where joy is shared and sorrow eased; where fathers and mothers are respected and loved, where children are wanted; where the simplest food is good enough for kings because it is earned; where money is not as important as loving-kindness; where even the tea kettle sings from happiness. That is home. God bless it!”

The Home

Home is a heavenly word, or it should be. A home is a place of refuge, and should be the most heavenly place on earth. Each one, no doubt, has an ideal of what home should be. With some it might be a fine house and furniture, abundant food and the luxuries of life; but these things do not make the true, happy home. “Better is a dinner of herbs” – we all know the rest.

~

When all the homes are well-founded and wisely managed, the government will have little to fear. Take care of the home, and the nation will take care of itself.

~

Too many women think good housekeeping is good homemaking, yet a well-kept house may not mean a pure dwelling place for the soul. We may be judged by outward appearance by many as we pass along in life; but in the end the final judgement – of higher power than the earthly – will be of the good use and cleanliness of mind and soul. I like an immaculate house, but only so far as it is a sign of an immaculate soul. I believe in beautiful homes, but first of all I believe in being clean within, and radiating that cleanliness in good companionship. A house cannot be a home without the proper spirit of companionship and helpfulness.

~

Mothers have a God-given duty of creating a noble atmosphere. The home should contain peace and rest and comfort; it should help the man of the field to enjoy everything from the earth to the sky. The country teems with interesting things far beyond the marvels of man.

~

Home may be the smallest of dwellings, with a tiny patch of earth, but if it is a place where the soul is at peace with its Maker it is home. Just the meeting of two people may mean the creating of the home-spirit – which is good for the progress of the world. Keep picked up and cleaned up and bright and shining in the furnishing of the home, by all means; but remember there are higher things than money and mansions.

~

There is a nobility of heart which observes the Golden Rule in all things. Others may write of the inside or outside of the material part of the house – but the real home is where the true home-spirit abides. There is a subtle “something” that far outweighs the material in homemaking. The true home-spirit will keep the boy and girl so interested that they will love and stick to their home in spite of all outside attractions or allurements, for this spirit will beautify all the surroundings to be in accord with the beauty of mind and heart. The spirit to “do or die” trying to carry out unselfish ideals has made our country home a haven to which the dear ones flock. While it is well-kept within and without, it is the mother-spirit of helpfulness which draws the family together in happiness.

Ten Ways to Make Your House a Home

By Jessica Gerald

Our home is such an important part of our family's life. There are some basic things we can do to insure that our home is a place of refuge and security for our husband and children.

Here are ten tips to help accomplish this goal:

1. Keep it clean and tidy. That doesn't mean we have to be immaculate housekeepers. If we do a daily tidy-up and a weekly housecleaning, our home life will be much more restful. Clutter is stressful. And keep the dishes caught up!

2. Nutritious food and family dinners. Fast food on the go is ok once in awhile, but not as a regular habit. Our children and husbands benefit from simple, nourishing meals and snacks. And having a regular, sit-down family dinner together has been shown to have many benefits.

3. Predictable routines. Our families thrive when things are on schedule. It gives a sense of stability. There should be regular times for eating, sleeping, chores, and homework. It also helps to build responsibility in children when they know they have to fulfill their responsibilities before they play.

4. Cozy and tastefully decorated. This does not in any way mean you house has to be magazine-beautiful. If our homes are inviting, cozy, comfortable, and decorated in a way that we and our families enjoy, that is sufficient. My living room doilies are from the 1940s and 1950s. Some were handmade. But they are pretty and I like them, so that is what I use.

5. Hospitality. Our kids, whether they are small or young adults, need to know that their friends are welcome. When my boys were grade-school age, they would have several friends come for sleep-overs. Many times, I would wake up in the morning and step over sleeping bags filled with boys on the floor. I would usually set the table with bowls and boxes of cereal for all of them to eat when they got up. I put myself out some, but it was worth it to make their friends feel welcome, and to get to know my sons' friends.

6. Demonstrate love. Our children and husbands benefit greatly when we show our love for them in various ways. My husband might not have wonderfully romantic lines to say to me, but on snowy, icy mornings, he cleans off my car and scrapes the windshield before he leaves for work. So when I leave an hour later, I don't have to do all of this. Love is a verb.

7. Mutual respect. Treat your husband and children with as much respect as you would guests. Good manners are contagious. Don't discuss them in a negative way to other people, either. Be each other's allies.

8. Words and tone of voice. This seems like a small thing, but it can make a huge difference. Have you ever been somewhere and overheard a mother insulting or degrading her children? Or a wife speaking to her husband with contempt? Or have you been in a store, and a woman yelled at her child so loudly and harshly that you jumped yourself?

We all have those days when we feel like acting like that. But if we think before we speak, following the Bible's advice, our family relationships will be a lot more peaceful. Plus, we are setting a positive example for our children when it comes to dealing with others. Also, our voices sound much more feminine when they are soft and kind, not loud and harsh.

9. Positive attitudes toward family members. Smile often, use encouraging words, show your confidence in them. Listen when they talk, build them up, boost their confidence. When they have failed, assure them that they have succeeded in gaining wisdom and experience. Let them know you think highly of them.

10. Lastly, keep your sense of humor. Be able to laugh at yourself. Laughter can help everyone de-stress. Enjoy everyday moments with your family. They are your greatest treasure, your gift from God.

Table Manners for Little Ones

This is from Home Dissertations,
Domestic Life, 1890
by Mrs. E. Stevens Tilton

In silence I must take my seat,

And give God thanks before I eat;

Must for my food inpatience wait,

Till I am asked to hold my plate.

I must not scold, nor whine, nor pout,

Nor move my chair nor plate about;

With knife, or fork, or napkin ring,

I must not play, nor must I sing;

I must not speak a useless word,

For children should be seen, not heard;

I must not talk about my food,

Nor fret if I don't think it good;

I must not say, "The bread is old,"

"The tea is hot, " "The coffee cold."

I must not cry for this or that

Nor murmur if my meat is fat.

My mouth with food I must not crowd,

Nor while I'm eating speak aloud;

Must turn my head to cough or sneeze,

And when I ask say, "If you please;"

The table-cloth I must not spoil,

Nor with my food my fingers soil;

Must keep my seat when I have done;

Nor round the table sport or run;

When told to rise, then I must put

My chair away with noiseless foot,

And lift my heart to God above,

In praise of all his wondrous love.

Being Frugal

Here are some various tips for saving:

  • Do not do any impulse buying, and save for what you want instead of using credit cards.
  • Shop thrift stores for clothes. You will be surprised at the bargains you can find. Or, make your own dresses/skirts. Patters are good investments since they can be used over and over.
  • Use a clothes line to dry your clothes. Electric dryers can be costly. I cut my electric costs in half by hanging our clothes out.

  • Always make a shopping list for the grocery store, and do not shop when you are hungry.
  • Buy clothing that does not need drycleaning. Many items that are "dry-clean only" can be washed with Woolite.
  • Use what what our grandmothers used to clean with: vinegar and baking soda. This will save you a bundle.
  • Save leftover scraps of soap and put them in a jar with a little water for a handcleaner.
  • Turn your thermostat down at night. Better yet, open the windows and leave it off until you can't stand the heat.
  • Buy your husband a home repair book so he can learn to do those repairs himself. We just remodeled our rotten floor in the back bathroom and ended up having to do the biggest part of the work ourselves. :) We learned ALOT!!

There is great satisfaction and many rewards for spending less and using less, the most important being a stay-at-home wife and/or mother. You may even find that, instead of having less, you actually save money by working at home.

When Your Husband Loses His Job

By Mrs. Anita Koller

My husband was recently laid off for the third time in less then three years due to downsizing and restructuring of business. This last layoff is probably the hardest of the three. As the wife of my dear husband, I have stood alongside of him, and God has sustained us and seen us through financially and spiritually. I have no doubt in my mind that He will do no less this time around.
~
In today's world, when a man gets laid off it is so very tempting for the wife to say, “I need to get a job to help out with the bills until my husband gets back to work.” But would God have the wife to do that? I do not believe so.
~
It is my conviction to wait on the Lord to provide for my family through my husband. He always has and most likely will continue to do so. All this means is that all our future plans have been put on the back burner, we will have to go a little while without the extras, and that new dress will just have to wait.
~
What message would I send to my children if I obtained job to “help out with the bills?” That Daddy is failure and not able to provide? The Lord has called me to be my husband's helpmate. My job is not an easy one, but it is important nonetheless. While my husband is without work, I am trying to make the best of the time at hand by continuing with my duties as a mother, wife, and homemaker. Below I have listed some of the things I have been doing thus far in hopes that it will encourage other women who are in my shoes. You can stand firm, and you will make it through!
~
~
  1. Become creative in fixing meals on less money. Dig way back in the pantry and find those lost canned vegetables you have been meaning to use. Also realize that eating out anywhere (even McDonald's) is just not affordable. Be willing to not buy fancy foods, snacks etc. Bake your own bread and drink lots of water. Save the tea and coffee for a special time.
    ~
  2. Have that long-needed yard sale to obtain some extra grocery money. This is also a great way to organize your home and to declutter those closets. Besides, your husband's next job may be in a different city, and you may have to move. It is a good idea to be prepared.
    ~
  3. Stay home. The less you run, the less gas you use, and the less money you spend. Do not go to the store or anywhere unless you have to. When you do have to go somewhere, try to get multiple errands done.
    ~
  4. Give up the extra activities like piano lessons, sports, etc. While your husband is laid off, the money can be used for more important things like groceries or the electric bill.
    ~
  5. To keep the children's minds busy, help them find a way to earn money to help out with the family economy. For example, our son is starting a lawn mowing business called “Small Yard Ventures.” We have a push mower, and we live in town, so he will be able to serve others locally. Our daughter is separating some of our flowers and herbs to sell at the farmer's market.
    ~
  6. Help your husband stay on track. Being laid off is very hard on men. God made them providers, and when they do not have a job they can become depressed and discouraged. It is important to ask his friends to call regularly to keep him encouraged. Also try to help him stay on a schedule. I encourage my husband to get up at the same time he would get up to go to work. I gently encourage him to shower, shave, and dress. I remind him when it is lunch time and encourage him to make phone calls. I even help him with his resume'. I have cut his hair and made ready his suit for interviews. I have made sure the computer desk is cleaned up every afternoon after he has done job searches, e-mailed resume's, and made phone calls. I have also purchased our local weekly paper as well as the Sunday paper so that he can look at the want ads. I pray for my husband often and encourage him to read his Bible daily and to seek God.
    ~
  7. Many folks have offered my husband small jobs, such as hauling rocks or doing yard work, to pay him until he gets a new job. I encourage him to do this to keep his mind busy while he waits for God to open the door of opportunity.
    ~
  8. We are attending Church weekly and asking for prayer from our brothers and sisters in Christ. We need all the prayer we can get.
    ~
  9. I am prepared for the worst and will not be discouraged if we have to sell everything and start all over. We know God has a plan.
    ~
  10. Lastly, I am too busy to look for a job myself. I already have a job! With mothering, taking care of my husband, the home, and homeschooling, I already have a few full-time jobs. The Lord will provide again. I will just have to stand firm.
    ~
May God encourage you in the midst of difficult times to look to Him and trust that He will provide through the means He has created.

Following the Law of Yahweh-What Does It Mean To Me?

What does following the Law of Yahweh mean to wives/mothers?

We have a great challenge not only to follow Yahweh's law, but also to help guide our family. Don't get me wrong. It is your husband's responsibility to lead. I am speaking more along the lines of the daily time you spend with your children. If you are like me, you have more time with the children than your husband does. Since my family is new to the law, we have had to transform our whole way of life. Our Creator knows what is best for us so we are better off following his instructions for our lives. However, it has challenged me to come up with new meal ideas while spending the same amount of money or less. Our wardrobe had to change. We are instructed to only wear clothing without mixed fibers. We learned to to make tassels or fringes for our four corners. I am responsible for making sure all unclean foods and products stay out of our home. I have to educate our children in daily life as to how to do the research on products in order to know what has clean or unclean ingredients. I also have to make sure to set an example for my daughter when it comes to preparing for Sabbath, making clothing, preparing meals, submitting to my husband. These are important responsibilities for a mother/wife. I have to be on my face before Yahweh everyday bombarding the Throne for help with my responsibilities. I have to pray for my husband's walk, my children's future, their future spouses, my unsaved loved ones, my brothers and sisters that are struggling with issues. I have to show kindness ever when it don't think it is deserved. I have to be hospitable even with it isn't convenient. I have to encourage even when I need encouragement.

I have a daughter in training and I want this to be a way of life for her. I don't want her to struggle with obedience, meal ideas, clothing options, or submission issues. I need to be her example. I, as well as my children, learn lessons better by seeing than by hearing.

Blessings,
Amanda

Mothers and the Role of Women at Home

Building and Tearing down

Mothers, you know the great importance Yahweh places on building generations of righteousness. If you desire it in your home, I must say that you can be the greatest single help to your husband (besides Yahweh) or you can be the greatest stumbling block to making it a reality. How can you best help your husband bring it into a reality? You have a very important role and without it, the home will most likely fail:

Proverbs 14:1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

In this scripture, we see the difference between a wise woman and a foolish woman. Surely, you want to be the wise woman that builds her house rather than the foolish woman that "plucketh it down with her hands". Scripture is full of admonitions toward women and examples of how a wise woman conducts herself.

Proverbs 24:3 Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: 4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

Let's examine the characteristics of a foolish woman. First:

Proverbs 9:13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.

What does it mean to be "clamorous"? The BDB Lexicon defines this word as:

1993 hm'h' hamah {haw-maw'}
Meaning: 1) to murmur, growl, roar, cry aloud, mourn, rage, sound, make noise, tumult, be clamorous, be disquieted, be loud, be moved, be troubled, be in an uproar 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to growl 1a2) to murmur (fig. of a soul in prayer) 1a3) to roar 1a4) to be in a stir, be in a commotion 1a5) to be boisterous, be turbulent

The above characteristics are present in a foolish woman. In context, the foolish and simple woman in Proverbs 9 is a harlot. She is loud, boisterous, murmuring and noisy. Her spirit is disquieted and she is obviously unsatisfied.

Proverbs 7:11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: 12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)

This is in great contrast to the will of Yahweh:

1pet 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of Elohim of great price. 5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in Elohim, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: 6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

Scripture is worthy of instruction for our lives. Occasionally, a scripture will repeat something twice. When it does, I like to take notice. When it is repeated three times, I really like to take notice. However, there is one thing that is repeated in Proverbs five times. Yes, five times in the book of Proverbs we find the same concept repeated.

Proverbs 19:13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

Proverbs 21:9 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house

Proverbs 21:19 It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.

Proverbs 25:24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.

Proverbs 27:15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

Five times within 8 chapters we see the same exact concept repeated. Why is it repeated so often? Many look at these verses and just chuckle a bit and move on. But I do not believe that the purpose for these proverbs was to create humor, but rather to admonish and instruct. It is obvious that the role of a woman in a home is not to contend or brawl. Doing so feeds the desire of a man to go elsewhere. Perhaps it isn't in the wilderness or on the corner of a rooftop, but it is probably at work or with his friends or anywhere but that house! Is it any wonder so many men are not home with their families? Surely, it is their fault alone but so often their foolish wives feed this destructive cycle with their contentions and brawling.

As a woman of the home, and wife to the man, she has great influence over the decisions her husband makes. Many are the examples of the women who brought down their house with their influence. Starting with Adam:

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Genesis 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

In the Torah, Yahweh knew the potential of a foolish woman:

Deuteronomy 7:1 When Yahweh thy Elohim shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; 2 And when Yahweh thy Elohim shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them: 3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. 4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of Yahweh be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

Exodus 34:14 For thou shalt worship no other Elohim: for Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous Elohim: 15 Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; 16 And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.

So important was Yahweh's command not to take on such wives, that the people of Yahweh had to put them away in the books of Nehemiah and Ezra.

Ezra 10:10 And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel. 11 Now therefore make confession unto Yahweh Elohim of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives. 12 Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.

Solomon knew the potential very well:

1 Kings 11:4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with Yahweh his Elohim, as was the heart of David his father.

As did Ahab:

1 Kings 21:25 But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of Yahweh, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.

Can we begin to see the influence and importance of a woman's role in the home? She is extremely important to the outcome of the home. She can tear it down with her hands, or she can build it up. Job's wife made an attempt to tear down what was left of their home:

Job 2:9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse Elohim, and die. 10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of Elohim , and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

Job warned her of speaking as a foolish woman speaks. It is true that a woman's speech has much influence on the home. Note that the examples of women who tore down their homes did so with their speech. Delilah was one:

Judges 16:15 And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth. 16 And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death; 17 That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto Elohim from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

From contention to clamor to the wearing down of a man with words, a foolish woman has been the destruction of many a man. Proverbs speaks much warning of avoiding a 'strange woman' and 'foolish woman' that would draw a man's heart away through lust and adultery. All throughout scripture, women were used as powerful tools of the devil or powerful blessings from Yahweh. Women have the choice to be one or the other.

Let's now talk about the blessings! In the same way a woman can tear down a house with her words, so can she build it up:

1 Peter 3:1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; 2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

See! A woman's influence can not just turn a man's heart away from Yahweh, but can turn his heart to Yahweh! But, be certain it is not done through nagging and persuading. It is done through chaste conversation and fear. More on this later :)

The blessing of motherhood

If only the women of this generation could see the great blessings of motherhood! But so often the role of a mother is insulted and considered bland, boring and of low skill. But to Yahweh, it is all-important:

1 Timothy 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. 15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

Saved in childbearing? What could this mean? Some understand it to mean that women are saved in childbearing because it was through the birth of Messiah that we are all saved. This may be, but the text doesn't necessarily say that a woman is saved because she has borne children, but that childbearing is the role that a saved woman functions in, rather than being in a role of authority and teaching men.

Many are the examples of women in scripture that considered childbearing to be of great importance. Rachel was one:

Genesis 30:1 And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die. 2 And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in Elohim's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

"Give me children or else I die"! So important was the role of bearing children, that there was a great enmity in Jacob's home because Leah was bearing children and Rachel was barren.

1Samuel 1:9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of Yahweh. 10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto Yahweh, and wept sore. 11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O Yahweh of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto Yahweh all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

Yahweh heard Hannah, knowing that she had vowed to give this child to Him. This child became Samuel, a great prophet and priest of Yahweh. Samuel was the one who replaced Eli, the wicked priest who had his generations cut off because he did not restrain the evil deeds of his children (See the "Fathers, Turn Your Hearts!" study).

Deuteronomy 7:12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that Yahweh thy Elohim shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers: 13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee. 14 Thou shalt be blessed above all people: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.

All throughout scripture, Yahweh's opening of a barren womb was considered to be a great blessing. Yahweh did so with many women in scripture:

  • Sarah, who bore Isaac
  • Rebekah, who bore Jacob and Esau
  • Rachel, who bore Joseph and Benjamin
  • Manoah's wife, who bore Samson
  • Hannah, who bore Samuel
  • Elisabeth, who bore John the Baptist

There we see a list of great men of scripture. The women who bore these men were no doubt thankful and appreciated the role of motherhood. If you are a mother with children, praise Yahweh of heaven along with Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Manoah's wife, Hannah and Elisabeth for the blessing He has poured out on you! It is high time that we lift up the blessing and importance of motherhood! So important is the role of motherhood, that one is not even considered a widow unless she has brought up children:

1 Timothy 5:9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, 10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. 11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Messiah, they will marry; 12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. 13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. 14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15 For some are already turned aside after Satan. 16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the assembly be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

Therefore, we again see the importance of childbearing. I have had some women say things to me something like, "What do I have? I can't go out and be used by Yahweh to bring others to Messiah like my husband. I'm stuck at home with these kids". Such is the attitude of many women today, but it ought not be so! Mothers, you not only have great influence on your husband, you also have great influence on the righteousness of your children. As mentioned in the "Fathers, Turn Your Hearts!" study, if you had 2 children and 6 generations thereafter had 2 children, you would have influenced 252 children. If you had 5 children and 6 generations thereafter had 5 children, you would have influenced 97,655 children! You have hundreds, if not thousands of people that you influence every day of your life. With every bit of time you spend with your children, with every conversation, every bit of care and every action, you potentially are also (in a sense) doing so with many many others. And not only with your children's children, but also consider the ones that they may influence and bring to righteousness. What a shame it would be, if a woman would receive the great blessing of having children, only to see her tear down her house with contentions and brawling and clamor and straying from the faith in Yahweh and the role that Yahweh created her to be in! A wise woman will bring forth wise children:

Proverbs 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Proverbs 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Why is it that the mother is brought to shame? She obviously is responsible for spending the greatest amount of time with the children. If her child is left to himself, his foolishness will bring his mother to shame. His foolishness isn't driven away by his mother. The great potential that a mother has to influence her children is typified in the example of Timothy, whose mother and grandmother were commended:

2 Timothy 1:2 To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from Elohim the Father and Messiah Yahushua our Master. 3 I thank Elohim, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, 5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. 6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of Elohim which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

His mother and grandmother are commended for their genuine faith. From a child, Timothy was taught the Holy Scriptures:

2 Timothy 3:14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Messiah Yahushua.

Although Timothy was a young man (1Tim 4:12), he was used by Yahweh in a mighty way throughout scripture. Paul considered Timothy his "own son in the faith" and is mentioned many times in scripture. For example:

1 Corinthians 4:17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in Yahweh, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Messiah, as I teach every where in every church.

Letters to Timothy make up 2 books in the scriptures that we read. What great fruit was borne out of the dedication of his mother and grandmother! Their example should be an inspiration for all mothers to raise a son such as this.

It is sad that so many mothers today are looking for substitutes to fill their role. Too often, mothers today use the television or day care centers to babysit their children while they go off and do other things like chasing careers and chattering with friends or relatives. We see mothers using cow or vegetable-based milk substitutes to feed their children rather than the milk that Yahweh created children to drink. Is it any wonder there is a lack of bonding between mother and child in this day and age? Rather than providing healthy and wholesome meals for her household, many mothers slap together cheap and ready-made meals. And in spite of the modern day servants, in the form of washing machines, dishwashers, microwaves and the like, many modern day mothers complain about the lack of time. Yet, she usually finds the time to watch her TV programs, talk on the phone with friends/relatives or waste her life away with other foolish and unprofitable things. It ought not be so!

This is not to say that motherhood is easy, because it isn't! It is a tough job that takes hard work, diligence and virtuous character.

Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

A virtuous woman is rare. But it is a worthy goal to be attained. Let's examine her characteristics:

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

First, we see that her husband trusts her. She is in a right relationship with her husband. This is an important foundation. We will discuss more of this in the next study

12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. 13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. 14 She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

We see that the virtuous woman is a worker. She is not a lazy woman. She "worketh willingly with her hands" to run the household. We see that her focus is the home. She is not focused on a career, being a busybody or wasting her time.

15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. 16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. 17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. 18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

Notice that she rises while it is yet night to provide for her household, and her candle "goeth not out by night". She obviously puts the needs of others before her own needs, even the need of sleep. Because "The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her", she is trusted to make wise purchasing decisions for her household.

19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. 20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

Notice that not only are the needs of her household met, she is able to provide for the needs of other households. She is literally overflowing with an abundance of blessings for her house and with this abundance, helps the poor and needy. What a blessed home!

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. 24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

Not only does her house have clothing, her house is clothed well and she is able to sell clothing to others for profit.

25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

Her clothing is her character, and her adorning is her works. As we read earlier, this kind of adornment is the will of Yahweh:

1Peter 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of Elohim of great price.5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in Elohim, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

Continuing in Proverbs:

26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

We see that her conversation is not like the clamorous voice of a fool, but the wise voice of kindness. Kindness is the law on her lips.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

We see that she is not a woman of idleness, but a faithful worker that cares for the needs of her household. Idleness is the enemy of a virtuous woman.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. 29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. 30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth Yahweh, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

HalleluYah, we see what this virtuous woman reaps for her labors, kindnesses and a true fear of Yahweh. Her children call her blessed and her husband praises her. Her own fruits and works praise her. We see by this example the high degree of love and care that this woman has for her household. This is in stark contrast to the career women of today. Mothers, learn to love your role as a keeper of the house and mother to your children!

Let's now examine other characteristics of a righteous woman. The older women were expected to teach the younger women these characteristics:

Titus 2:3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

In this sentence we see the need for a woman to be sober. The Greek word here (#4994, from #4998) carries a meaning of being temperate and self controlled. Therefore, she is in control of herself and her emotions. We also see that she should love her husband and children. One would think that this should be obvious, but apparently it isn't! It was something that the older women needed to teach the younger women how to do. A woman's love for her husband and children will feed her desire to care for them to the level that the virtuous woman did in Proverbs 31.

5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of Elohim be not blasphemed.

The Greek word for "discreet" in this verse is related to the one translated "sober" in the previous verse. There is a real emphasis on teaching the younger women to have a sound and self controlled mind. Friberg's Lexicon has:

"strictly, having a sound or healthy mind; as having ability to curb desires and impulses so as to produce a measured and orderly life self-controlled, sensible."

Being chaste is another thing that needed to be taught. The meaning behind this is purity. The same word is translated "pure" here:

1 Timothy 5:22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.

Being a "keeper at home" was also to be taught. Let's examine the various lexicons on this:

Thayer's:

"3626 oivkouro,j oikouros {oy-koo-ros'} Meaning: 1) caring for the house, working at home 1a) the (watch or) keeper of the house 1b) keeping at home and taking care of household affairs 1c) a domestic"

Friberg:

"of one preoccupied w. domestic affairs working at home, domestic subst. homemaker (TI 2.5)."

UBS Greek Dictionary:

"devoted to home duties"

Louw-Nida Lexicon:

" homemaker...one who works in the home - 'one who takes care of the home, homemaker."

They all agree, it means that a woman should be taking care of the house. This is in line with Proverbs 31 and other scriptures that we have examined to this point.

The women were also taught to be good and obedient to their husbands. To be good is obvious, to be obedient to their husbands is an issue we will address in the next study.

1 Timothy 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

This is yet another scripture uplifting the role of motherhood and the keeping of the home. In both verses, and in the scripture previously discussed, we see the concern raised that reproach is brought upon a home where a woman is not fulfilling these roles. If these things convict you, take away the reproach! It is time that women appreciate and love what Yahweh has called them to do. If this is what Yahweh has created women to do, then I have no doubt that this is where a woman is happiest. Yahweh created fish to swim in the water, animals to roam on land and birds to fly through the air. All of Yahweh's creation is happiest when it is where it was created to be. The same is true for men and women. Yahweh did not create women to be mighty leaders among men, but to care for the home and for the children. This is where she is happiest.

Jeremiah 8:7 Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of Yahweh.

Therefore, let's cast off the foolish influences of modern society and let's walk in the will of Yahweh for men and women. As we have seen, motherhood is a crucial part of a spirit filled home of righteousness. Without her, all the efforts of her husband can be in vain. There is much more to say in the next study when we discuss the role of wives. It is difficult to separate the role of wife and mother because they are so intricately mixed. A woman being the wife Yahweh desires her to be has much to do with whether she is building up her house or tearing it down with her hands. Consider the scriptures given about being a true mother to your children and keeper of the home. The right road is narrow and difficult, but surely Yahweh can bless the work of your hands and will be your help. Trust in Him as you walk in His ways. He will bring it to pass. May Yahweh bless you as You do so!
